The Barcelona Chair

Barcelona® Chair by Knoll

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe 1929

One of the most recognized objects of the last century, and an icon of the modern movement, the Barcelona Chair exudes a simple elegance that epitomizes Mies van der Rohe’s most famous maxim–“less is more.” Each Barcelona piece is a tribute to the marriage of modern design and exceptional craftsmanship.

This chair was designed to furnish the German Pavilion at the International Exhibition in Barcelona, where it would serve as seating worthy of the King and Queen of Spain.  Not only is comfortable, but it is also good looking.  It is available from Knoll in several colors.  Other furniture manufacturers are offering a modified version of this chair.  Lee Industries offers a chair and a chaise in Sicily Camel leather with polished stainless steel frame.

Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams show their interpretation called the Major chair with grid-tufted Teal upholstery and a satin-brass base.

Jonathan Adler offers the Goldfinger lounge chair with a rectangular polished brass base in Rialto Navy velvet or Lucerne Oyster fabric.
