LED Lighting 101

September, 13 2018

LED stands for Light Emitting Diode.

LEDs began as exciting but expensive electronic components in the sixties, used in handheld calculators and other similar devices. Through research and development, LED technology advanced, became more efficient and less expensive, until it reached its current form.

LED lighting is very different from other lighting sources such as incandescent bulbs and compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs). LEDs are the size of a fleck of pepper, and a mix of red, green, and blue LEDs is typically used to make white light.  LEDs emit light in a specific direction, reducing the need for reflectors and diffusers that can trap light. This feature makes LEDs more efficient for many uses such as recessed down lights and task lighting. With other types of lighting, the light must be reflected to the desired direction and more than half of the light may never leave the fixture. LEDs emit very little heat. In comparison, incandescent bulbs release 90% of their energy as heat and CFLs release about 80% of their energy as heat.

LED is a highly energy efficient lighting technology, and has the potential to fundamentally change the future of lighting in the United States.  Residential LEDs – especially ENERGY STAR rated products — use at least 75% less energy, and last 25 times longer, than incandescent lighting.

LED standard base light bulbs (A Shape) are available in several colors.  We like Batteries + Bulbs Duracell dimmable soft white bulb in the purple box because it most resembles incandescent.  Daylight is actually whiter than soft white and cool white is not recommended.    PECO is promoting these bulbs with a subsidized discount now.  We recommend you retrofit your existing lamps and recessed lighting (with the appropriate replacement size).  Please note that if you have dimmer switches on incandescent switched you will need to upgrade the dimmer switches to work with LED recessed lighting.

We also recommend purchasing LED lamps and fixtures, such as those featured here.  The chandelier featured above is Hudson Valley Lighting’s Ashleigh Chandelier by Mitzi.   The Floor Lamp featured is Koncept Lighting’s  Lady 7 LED Dimmable Telescopic Floor Lamp.

Fabric Trends

September, 6 2018

If you want to keep up with what’s hot in fabric, here’s what’s happening.  Popular colors include blush, green, and brown.  Boho Patchwork, Nomadic Designs, Traditional Designs in updated colors are the patterns we are seeing.  Upholstery textures are nubby, boucle, slub, and soft.  In addition, performance fabrics that are sustainable, cleanable, and fade resistant (Indoor/Outdoor and Crypton) are everywhere.  The use of trim such as tape, pom-poms, and metallics is picking up.

Caramel Leather – A Classic

July, 7 2018

Why is leather a better option than performance fabric? We have noticed a shift away from the navy blue performance velvet sectional sofa into the resurgence of caramels and vintage tan sofas. Most of our male clients love leather upholstery. Leather is handsome and neutral, as well as soft and comfortable in all temperatures. So give neutral toned leather upholstery a chance in your home!

Quadrille Fabrics – China Seas Lucaya Ikat Multi

March, 15 2018

It’s almost Spring and we are excited to see colorful fabrics and wall coverings. Quadrille Fabrics is known for their beautiful hand block screen prints. They offer so many beautiful patterns that it was hard to select one to feature. Quadrille Fabrics offers the following collections: Quadrille, Alan Campbell, Cloth Paper, Wallpaper, Suncloth and Plains.

Ikat is a dyeing technique used to pattern textiles that employs a resist dyeing process similar to tie-dye on either the warp or weft fibres. Ikat fabric weaving styles vary widely. Many design motifs may have ethnic, ritual or symbolic meaning or have been developed for export trade. Ikat patterns have been around for a long time, however, Quadrille gives them a modern spin by using bright colors.

Trend Report

February, 8 2018

We just got back from the NY Now Show at the Javitz Center.  Besides enjoying the day with my long time friend who is also an Interior Designer, I learned a lot.  So you ask, what’s hot now?  According to Nicole Davis, writer for Lighting & Decor Magazine, Global patterns continue to reign.  We saw a lot of ethnic, southwest, and bohemian fabric patterns.  However, the change that we are seeing from the new millennium is in added decoration.  Jana Platina Phipps, known as the Trim Queen, stated after spending time in High Point, NC for the fall furniture market, “maximalism” is in.  Embellishment is a way to tip toe into this trend without going full throttle – it gives the product dimension and a higher perceived value, and it can be contemporary, not just the very traditional looks people think of.”  Davis also states that “maximalism is a trend that’s coming over from fashion, with houses like Gucci and Prada showing embellishment and fabric collaging all over this season’s intros.”

One of the vendors that we visited, Cozy Nomad of Malibu, combined the ethnic fabrics with faux fur trim on the pillows and throw blankets.  Cozy Nomad sells imported carpets in addition to these amazing accessories.

The other vendor that we visited, Creative Touch Rugs, is selling Ikat velvet pillows in an array of ethnic patterns and colors, both bright and traditional.  We think these pillows can make a room used on a neutral sofa.

Wonderful Wallpaper

February, 1 2018

Albert Hadley collaborated with Harry Hinson in 2001 to create a collection encompassing playful/light hearted hand printed textiles and wall coverings. Fireworks is a single screen print that represents sparklers. An absolute classic.  This wallpaper is available in several color ways:  Beige on White, Blue on White, Black on Off-White, Red on White, White on Off-White, and Yellow on White.  This wallpaper works well in a bedroom, kitchen or bathroom.  We love this wallpaper because it can be used to update a traditional room and give it a modern twist.  It works well with both traditional and contemporary design.  The vertical pattern repeat is 6.8″ and the horizontal repeat is 9″ so it is not too big to use on a small wall. “Caliente is the signature color of a modern architectural masterpiece; a lush carpet rolled out for a grand arrival; the assured backdrop for a book-lined library; a powerful first impression on a glossy front door. The eye can’t help but follow its bold strokes. Harness the vitality.”

—Ellen O’Neill, Benjamin Moore & Co.

This color is fabulous when used on grasscloth wallpaper.  Here are a photos of a home office in a Main Line condominium and in a Jenkintown home :
